About Us

Free Madison Valley is a community of neighbors committed to promoting a denser and more vibrant neighborhood with more housing and more space for small businesses and community organizations near our transit stops. As YIMBYs, we say “Yes In My Backyard”! Let’s work together to create a more complete neighborhood within a 12-minute walk (or 1/2 mile) of the RapidRide G’s new MLK, 24th Ave, and 22nd Ave stops. And let’s push the city to allocate a portion of development fees to improve Madison Valley’s accessibility, infrastructure, pedestrian safety, and tree canopy while reducing displacement risk. Free Madison Valley from antiquated suburban zoning!

Background: Washington State is requiring Seattle to allow 4 units on all lots and 6 units on lots within 1/4 mile of a major transit stop or if at least 2 are affordable units (see HB 1110). Mayor Harrell's proposed rezoning changes designed to comply with this state requirement double down on short DADUs and lot sprawl, especially on lots under 6,000 square feet, which will get us just enough density for parking issues and tree loss, and not enough density to ensure housing abundance or fund necessary infrastructure improvements. As the rezoning heads to City Council in 2025, residents are pushing for a solution to these problems: let us build up not out! Legalize stacked flats on all lots while ensuring developers preserve a small shared backyard with a large tree. And increase height limits even more near frequent transit.
